Tear streaks under the eyes
Tear streaks under the eyes

Tear tracks under the eyes in dogs and cats can be caused by several factors and are often related to processes related to the production and drainage of tears. Tears are produced by the lacrimal glands, which are located in the corners of the eyelids. These glands produce tear fluid, which consists of water, salt and proteins. They are evenly distributed over the surface of the eyeball with each blink. This process helps lubricate the eye, maintain moisture, and protect against irritants.

Tears are drained through the lacrimal puncta, which are located in the corners of the eyelids. From there, tears are directed into the lacrimal sac and then through the tear ducts into the nasal cavity. This process ensures that excess tear fluid is removed. If the tear drainage process is impaired or excess tear production occurs, it can lead to the formation of tear tracks under the eyes. This may be caused by anatomy, allergies, infections, environmental irritants, or problems with the connective tissues that support the eye.

Some breeds of dogs and cats, especially those with short noses (eg, pugs, Persian cats), may have more pronounced tear production due to anatomical features. Regular hygienic cleaning of the under-eye area may be necessary to prevent tear stains and reduce skin irritation.

Tear tracks under the eyes in cats can have several causes. Here are some of the possible factors that may cause this symptom:

  1. Epiphora. Epiphora — This is the excessive secretion of tear fluid. This can be caused by a variety of reasons, including inflammation of the tear ducts, eye irritation, infections, allergies or anatomical conditions.

  2. Conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis — inflammation of the conjunctiva (mucous membrane of the eyes). This may be caused by an infection, allergy or irritation.

  3. Protection from external factors. Some cat breeds, especially those with short noses, may have tear ducts as a natural defense mechanism against external factors such as wind and dust.

  4. Allergies. Allergies to dust, pollen, food or other substances can cause watery eyes and inflammation of the eyes.

  5. Design features of the muzzle. Some cats may have a narrow muzzle or flat nose, which creates conditions for the normal secretion of tears, which can lead to the formation of tear tracks.

  6. Foreign bodies. Dust, hair, or other foreign bodies in the eye may cause watery eyes.

  7. Genetic characteristics. Some breeds may have genetic characteristics that affect the formation of tear ducts.

If your cat develops tear tracks or other eye problems, it is recommended that you visit your veterinarian. He will examine your eyes, determine the cause and suggest appropriate treatment. In the case of infection or other serious problems, the doctor may prescribe treatment and sometimes even perform additional tests, such as examining the tear ducts.
