Scabies in dogs and cats — This is a skin disease caused by intradermal mites. There are several types of scabies, but the main ones are sarcocytic scabies, demodectic mange and otodectic mange.
Sarcocytic scabies. This disease is caused by mites of the genus Sarcoptes scabiei. Mites penetrate the top layer of skin, causing intense itching and inflammation. Areas with thin skin such as the ears, abdomen and paws are often affected.
Demodicosis. Demodicosis is caused by mites of the genus Demodex. These mites are naturally present on the skin of many animals, but when out of balance they can cause problems. Demodicosis can be localized (limited) or general (widespread throughout the body).
Otodecosis. Otodecosis affects the ears and external auditory canal in dogs and cats. Called otocecus — mites, which can lead to ear inflammation, itching and discomfort.
Symptoms of scabies may include:
Intense itching: The animal shows obvious signs of itching, may show fur, itch or even lose hair.
Redness and inflammation of the skin: The skin may be red, inflamed, and covered in small rashes or crusts.
Hair loss: Depending on the type of scabies, animals may experience hair loss in the affected area.
Changes in behavior: Animals may become restless, irritable and tired due to itching and discomfort.
Treatment of scabies requires the professional intervention of a veterinarian. Acaricides (against ticks) are usually used, and symptoms such as inflammation and infections may need to be treated. Before starting treatment, it is important to visit a veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
