Dry eyes

Dry eye in dogs and cats is a condition in which the ocular surface is not adequately moisturized, which can cause discomfort and irritation. Normal functioning of the eyes involves the constant production of tears, which moisturize and protect the eye from external influences.

Dry eyes can be caused by various factors:

  1. Inadequate tear production: If a pet does not produce enough tears, the eyes become less hydrated, which can cause dryness.

  2. Allergies: A reaction to allergens in the environment, such as pollen, dust, midges, etc., can cause dry eyes.

  3. External factors: Wind, cold, sunlight, air conditioning and other external factors can dry out the eyes.

  4. Infections: Some infections, viral or bacterial, can affect the tear glands and cause dryness.

  5. Mechanical injuries: Scratches, cuts or other mechanical damage to the ocular surface can lead to dryness.

  6. Anatomical Features: Some breeds of dogs and cats may be more susceptible to dry eyes due to their anatomy or facial features.

Symptoms of dry eyes in dogs and cats:

  • Frequent blinking.
  • Redness of the eyes.
  • Discharge of pus or mucus from the eyes.
  • Itching or discomfort in the eye area.

Ways to solve the problem:

  • Use of special moisturizing eye drops for animals.
  • Regular eye hygiene.
  • Removing allergens from the environment.
  • Ensuring a healthy diet and adequate water intake.
