Two men and a cat named Semyon

Cancer...

Dmitry did not even understand when he heard about his beloved wife's diagnosis. What cancer when life was just beginning to bloom? His son Vitia was the pride of the school, his wife Svitlana looked at her husband with loving eyes 24/7. Even their cat Semyon was a wonderful addition to their family harmony, greeting his owner at the doorstep every morning. He looked loyally into his eyes with his amber-yellow eyes, and regularly received Wanpy and Tomi treats bought in the city at ZooBonus.

...Svitlana burned to death in a matter of days, which were an absolute blur to Dmytro. Just a moment ago, he was holding his beloved's tender and transparent hand. Another moment later, the funeral, during which he stared petrified and saw nothing, stroking Vitya's head.

After the fortieth anniversary, Dmytro realised that he simply could not stay in the house where he saw his beloved every moment.

"The farm in Petrykivtsi needs a tractor driver. We provide accommodation. Payment is negotiable."

500 kilometres away. In two days, Dmytro gathered the things he and his son needed. He decided to preserve the house so that he could return at any time. On the way out, his son asked:

- "Dad, what about Semen?

Dmytro looked carefully into his son's eyes and explained with a single glance that he could not take care of everyone at the moment.

In Petrykivtsi, they were warmly welcomed. A farmer-employer provided an abandoned house for housing. Vitia went to the local school and immediately became a favourite of all the teachers. And Dmytro... His golden hands were appreciated not only at work. To distract himself from difficult memories, he spent all day helping someone. He repaired, dug, and gardened. In the evening, he and his son would often sit silently on the porch, looking at the starry sky and thinking about something masculine.

One morning, Dmytro fell ill. Vitia looked at his father with concern and asked:

- "Dad? Are you all right? Should I call a doctor?

- No, son, thank you, it's just a cold. I'll just lie down for a while and get back to work.

- What work, Dad? You're burning up! Give me the keys, I'll drive the tractor myself today.

Without waiting for his father to answer, Vitka grabbed the keys and ran out into the yard. He had mastered tractor driving back in the days when he could drive better than he could talk.

Dmytro was lying there, delirious with fever. He saw his beloved, who was smiling sadly, but did not allow him to come close to her. And then she said: "Vitya.

Dmytro was thrown up by something. He ran outside and automatically headed towards the farm. His heart was jumping out of his chest and only calmed down when he saw his tractor coming down the hill to the pond. And then everything happened like in a bad film. The tractor was picking up speed. The young driver obviously did not understand what had happened to the brakes and desperately steered the tractor, trying to get into the bend near the dam. He failed. The tractor skidded around the bend and fell sideways into the pond.

Dmytro saw it all as if in a dream.

He jumped off the dam and dived into the cab. The boy was terrified and pulling the door open. Dmytro pulled it from the other side. And then he beat on the glass with all his might. With his hands, elbows, head...

...Vitka coughed up water for a long time, helplessly looking back at the people gathered around him, and at his father, who was coughing up blood nearby.

Dmitry stood up. He patted his son's head and wrapped him in his wet jacket. He took him in his arms and carried him home through the village, whispering prayers:

- "Everything will be fine, son... Everything will be fine, son...

Just before the courtyard, Vitka started to cry, only now realising that he was a moment away from death. Dmytro kept his tears to himself. But right up until the moment when they entered the yard and saw Semen's shabby and thin cat sitting on the porch, looking at them with tired, loving amber-yellow eyes...
