Animal-assisted therapy

Kyiv is implementing a pilot project for the social rehabilitation of Defenders during their treatment in medical facilities.

One of the main areas of this project is the use of animal-assisted therapy (communication with animals). This is a very important area, because very often people with PWS (post-war syndrome) close themselves off from communicating with other people. Thanks to the Kyiv Zoo, our defenders have already been able to interact with chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits and turtles. Rehabilitation therapists work with patients in between medical procedures, which gives a double effect to treatment.

"I was surprised how much communication with animals can relax a person and enable psychologists to work with them. According to experts, after about two weeks of animal-assisted therapy, people begin to open up, because the biggest problem, especially for those who have been in captivity, is tactility. People are not ready to communicate and allow themselves to be touched, and it is communication with animals that socialises them," said Maryna Honda, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, who is responsible for this project.

We fully share this statement and are ready to assist in the implementation of this wonderful initiative.
