Tick removal tweezers
Ticks are dangerous parasites that can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, piroplasmosis, anaplasmosis, and others. They are particularly active from spring to autumn, posing a threat to both humans and pets. Quick and proper removal of ticks reduces the risk of infection, and it is important to use special tweezers for this purpose.
Why you should not use regular tweezers or your fingers
Pressing or jerking the tick can crush it, increasing the risk of infection through the blood or lymph. Often, the tick's head remains in the skin, which can cause inflammation. Regular tweezers or fingernails do not provide the necessary precision and reliable grip.
Features and varieties
Special tools for removing ticks come in various shapes, but they all have one goal: to remove the parasite completely, safely, and without putting pressure on its body.
Proper use of tweezers
Do not lubricate the tick with oil, alcohol, or cream! This can cause the tick to release saliva and increase the risk of infection.
Grasping: Use the tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, as close to the mouthparts as possible (not the body!). Carefully grasp the parasite, trying not to squeeze it.
Removal: Use a twisting motion (clockwise or counterclockwise, it doesn't matter), without jerking. Move slowly to remove the tick completely.
After removal: treat the wound with an antiseptic. Examine the tick—if any part remains, consult a doctor. Place the tick in a sealed container if you need to have it tested. Wash the tweezers and your hands after the procedure.
The relevance and importance of tweezers during tick season
Tick removal tweezers are a simple but extremely important tool that can prevent serious diseases. They are safer and more effective than improvised tools. Having such tweezers is a sign of a responsible attitude towards the health of your pet and yourself.
