Overview

The Sealyham Terrier is a very original and beautiful dog. Sealyhams are incredibly friendly dogs. They are very attached to the family in which they live. They enjoy playing with children and get along well with other pets. Sealyham Terriers are extraordinary dogs that will undoubtedly decorate your life with bright colors and make your family happy.

Origin

Sealyham Terrier – this is a very young breed, which got its name from the Sealyham estate in the county of Haverfordwest (Wales), owned by Captain John Edwards. Edwards bred dogs noted as excellent small game hunters. Selecting offspring for the desired qualities, Edwards crossed Dandie Dinmont Terriers, now extinct White English Terriers, Fox Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

Today these dogs are very popular and famous. In Hollywood, Sealyham became the fashion among movie stars. It is known that director Alfred Hitchcock, actress Elizabeth Taylor, Jean Harlow and Cary Grant had such a dog. Also, the English writer Dorothy Parker and many other famous personalities had a Sealyham dog. Sealyhams were also worn by Princess Margaret – sisters of the now reigning English queen.

In the past, the breed was very common in the British Isles, but interest in it fell after the ban on badger hunting. Sealychem – almost exclusively a companion dog. In 1910, the breed was officially recognized by the Kennel Club. Today Sealyham is one of the rare breeds.

Appearance

According to national standards adopted in different countries, the size of Sealyham may vary. She has powerful and strong square jaws. The transition from forehead to muzzle is very smooth. The nose is black. The eyes are deep set, medium in size, round in shape, dark in color. The ears are hanging, triangular in shape, of medium size. The neck is long, strong and muscular. The forelimbs are short and straight. The hind limbs are very well developed, strong and muscular. The back is of medium length, straight and flexible. The chest is deep and wide. Paws are directed straight, round in shape with thick pads. The tail is set high, usually docked and carried vertically. The coat is hard, long with a soft undercoat. The color is white. There may be blue, brown, lemon markings on the head and ears.

Character and temperament

These may be small dogs, but they don't seem to know about it! These dogs have a bright personality and often make a lot of noise. Despite their size, they need a lot of physical activity. It is also necessary to provide an outlet for their need to tear, tear, drag and chew something. Despite careful training, they can get along with their own cats, but can be aggressive towards other cats or small furry animals. Since the breed is not a worker, the diet and weight of the animal should be monitored to avoid obesity.

Leaving

Daily care will help to avoid tangling non-shedding wool. If this is not done, tangles are formed: the top layer of long hard wool falls off with a thick undercoat. To participate in the exhibition, you will need an expert haircut – a laborious process that requires qualifications and experience. Many pets are sheared evenly throughout the body.

Health

The Sealyhams are in very good health. They rarely get sick, they have excellent immunity. However, some dogs are born deaf. Unfortunately, not a single breed of dog with a dominant white coat color is immune from this. Sealyham Terriers also have allergic reactions to food and external irritants. In adulthood, Sealychems can suffer from eye diseases.
