Overview

Modern Cane Corso – descendants of gladiator dogs, they exude natural strength and grandeur. In appearance, they are harsh, they can even inspire fear, but in fact they become true friends for their owners and remain so throughout their lives. Being the fourteenth breed bred in Italy, the Cane Corso is the pride and national treasure of this country. The character of the dogs miraculously intertwined the dedication of the shepherd and the courage of the fighting breeds, and also reflected the lively temperament of the Italians themselves.

Cane Corso have sensitivity and intuition, they are ready to protect the owner and his family at any time and in any situation, which makes them unsurpassed guards. If a dog of this breed lives in your house, there is no need for alarm systems. They will not meet a thief who has entered the house with aggression, which is how they differ from other guard dogs, but the robber will very much regret meeting a native of the sunny Apennines. The aggressive reaction of the Cane Corso is left as a last resort, when it feels that a real threat looms over the owner and his property.

Origin

Cane Corso – national breed of Italy, very ancient. In literary sources, such dogs were mentioned already in the 15th century, depicted in fights with bears and lions. She was proud and admired. It is believed that the ancestors of the Cane Corso were Roman pickling dogs that fought wild animals. Initially, they were striped and very huge, the size of a bull. However, over time, changes have occurred and such Italian dogs have become much smaller due to crossing them with mastiffs and boxers. Soon the breed practically disappeared and, fortunately, it was restored in the post-war years. She has gained in popularity. Unfortunately, they began to massively breed it, but do not pay attention to quality. Today, these dogs are considered more like human companions than serious working dogs. However, they are still excellent watchdogs. In Italy, they are valued for their quality, and are still used in work. The breed was officially recognized by the International Cynological Association in 1996.

Appearance

Cane Corso is a fairly large dog, muscular and proportionate. They have a very massive head with a broad skull. The muzzle is slightly shorter than the skull, and exceeds the length in width. The lips are pendulous, covering the wide lower jaw. The eyes are oval, medium in size. Often the eye color is dark, but light shades are also allowed. The ears are hanging, wide at the base, triangular in shape, set high. The neck is muscular. The body is strong with a pronounced chest. The tail is set high, thick at the base, docked. The legs of the Cane Corso are long and muscular. The skin is thick. The coat is short but not smooth. Color can be black, gray, brindle and red. A black mask must be present, unless, of course, the Cane Corso is black. It is worth noting that in the past, both ears and tails were docked in Cane Corso, since these are the most vulnerable places in dogs. However, now many are opposed to ear cropping. Tails are still docked.

Character and temperament

Since ancient times, these dogs have been admired. Powerful, charismatic, fearless and calm and balanced. Excellent watchdogs that do not trust strangers. Adapted to any physical activity, they treat work with pleasure. Strong, intelligent and devoted to man. Unlike the rest, amazing dogs. At the same time, they love to reflect and ponder all their actions. Great companions.

Maintenance and care

The original purpose of the Cane Corso – it is the protection of private property and herds of animals. Therefore, it is best for such dogs to provide room for movement and keep them in yard conditions. By the way, Cane Corso in translation will mean "yard dog" and this is a kind of compliment that draws attention to the watchdog qualities of these dogs. However, over time, the breed has become very popular, and more and more people get these dogs because of their fame. Of course, everyone wants to have such an indispensable defender in the city, who can show off to friends. It is worth noting that the modern Cane Corso is quite friendly to others, especially if it is too early to socialize him. No stranger would dare to behave familiarly with such a formidable-looking dog. It is very easy to take care of him. Brush your pet's coat once a week with a stiff brush. Pay attention to the condition of your skin. Due to the lack of undercoat, the skin is very vulnerable. Treat your pet regularly for fleas and ticks.

Health

The main hereditary disease that worries the Cane Corso – It's hip dysplasia. The fact is that this disease is almost impossible to prevent. The only way to reduce the incidence rate is to choose puppies from healthy parents. And also at the age of 1 year, take x-rays to your pets to prevent the further appearance of unhealthy offspring. There are also cases of epilepsy and thyroid disease. Cane Corso's are prone to allergies and bloating, so choose your pet's diet carefully. These dogs can also experience torsion and eversion of the eyelids, which are corrected with a small surgical intervention.
