English Toy Terrier – this is an affectionate miniature dog, in appearance – a toy, but her hunting and guard instincts are very well developed, although there is no nervousness and tantrums characteristic of small dogs, too.
The English toy terrier is derived from the old English black and tan terrier, its origins are closely intertwined with the history of another, larger breed, the Manchester terrier. The ancestors of this dog were distinguished by exceptional agility and were popular in Victorian England, they were used as auxiliary dogs in fox hunting, as well as in the then popular blood sport – rat fights. At the first all-breed dog shows, black and tan terriers were divided by weight. Breeding work with the two weight classes of the Black and Tan Terrier continued until 1920, when they were officially divided into two breeds: the larger Manchester Terrier and the miniature Black and Tan Terrier. The name of the breed "English Toy Terrier" was adopted in 1962.
The body is harmoniously folded, the movements are graceful, like those of a ballerina. Always and to a large extent smooth-haired. A small wedge-shaped head, an elongated muzzle, a graceful neck, a narrow skull, a straight nose, jaws that are surprisingly strong, without wings, and the lower jaw is wide. Clearly pronounced cheekbones. Lips close to teeth, scissor bite. The relatively large ears are set high and close to each other, they are triangular in shape, reminiscent of a candle flame, always erect and pointed at the tips. Expressive almond-shaped dark eyes are deep set. Only one color allowed – black with bright tan marks, the shape of which is strictly defined by the standard.
This little dog has some of the temperament of a terrier. In general, they are loving, friendly and completely devoted to their family dogs. They will happily live in and out of the city and get along great with older children. They need socialization with other dogs, cats and children from an early age.
This dog has a short, thick coat that requires little maintenance. Everything you need – it is a grooming glove and a glitter cloth.
The English Toy Terrier is generally in good health. However, like many small breeds, they can have problems with kneecaps that can temporarily slip out of place (patellar luxation).
