Podenko Canario – endemic dog of the Canary Islands. The breed is distinguished by being part of a family of hounds that were distributed throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the surrounding islands, creating various breeds that are highly valued today. Podenco Canario is designed for hunting rabbits in difficult terrain. Unlike other hounds, when chasing game, it uses hearing and smell, which allows it to work successfully even in dense thickets. Often used as part of a large team of hounds – about 12 dogs. A non-aggressive and friendly Podenco Canario can be a great pet and companion.

Origin

The Podenco Canarios originated in the Canary Islands, where these dogs were supposedly brought in the 14th century by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Egyptians, and where they are more common in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Little known outside the islands. The breed has Egyptian roots and is possibly one of the most ancient. Images of Canarian greyhounds can be seen on engravings, sculptures, and bas-reliefs in the tombs of the pharaohs, as well as in the Louvre and the British Museum. Dogs of this type are distributed throughout the Mediterranean, they are found in Malta, Ibiza, Sicily, Italy and Spain. In 1987, the Podenco Canario was recognized by the International Cynological Federation, in the breed classification it was assigned to the group of Spitz and breeds of a primitive type, to a subgroup of primitive breeds for hunting use.

Appearance

This is a small dog with a strong build and an elongated head with a slightly pronounced transition from the forehead to the sharp muzzle. The almond-shaped eyes are set obliquely, the large ears are laid back when at rest and rise when the dog is activated. The long, low-set tail is sickle-shaped. The coloring of the Podenco Canario provides for variable combinations of white and red in various shades. The spotted color of this dog is considered the most valuable.

Character and temperament

The dogs of this breed have an enthusiastically lively temperament and a cheerful disposition. They are characterized by courage, courage and curiosity to everything around. The lack of a sense of aggression does not allow Podenco Canario to become a guard, but they can be excellent companions. These dogs are loyal to their owners and friendly to all family members. They know how to work in a team with other representatives of the breed.

Leaving

Podenco Canario are very hardy and adapt to any weather conditions. It is advisable to keep these active dogs in the countryside, but living in an apartment is also acceptable. At the same time, one should not forget that these hunters require long physical exertion and active walks. Caring for the short coat of the Canarian dog is easy: traditional bathing can be replaced by wiping with a damp cloth. It is advisable to brush the coat twice a week.
