The British Shorthair cat is one of the breeds that nature has been working on for much longer than man. As a result, we have a physically developed, harmoniously built animal with a light, accommodating character. Living together with him will not cause any special troubles to the owners. British cats attract with a calm disposition, bordering on phlegmatic, well-mannered and incredibly beautiful, plush fur that is pleasant to the touch. In the famous book "Alice in Wonderland" Lewis Carroll forever immortalized this breed in the image of the Cheshire cat.
British Shorthair – it is the most popular breed in the UK. Although the first recorded information about British Shorthair cats dates back to the beginning of the last century, in reality at that time the breed had existed for hundreds of years. This breed was introduced to the New World and gradually became more and more popular. Currently, the British Shorthair is characterized by different colors and spotting patterns. They were obtained as a result of selective breeding of the best street cats in the 19th century. The development of the breed continues today. The American Cat Association made a distinction between American Shorthairs and Old Worlders in 1967, listing the latter under the name "British Blue". The ACFA allowed Britons to compete in their shows in 1970, and The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) recognized the breed in 1980.
British Shorthair cats are called "good giants". Animals openly show their affection for their owners, but do not like to sit on their laps. British Shorthair cats do not require constant human attention and are quieter than their Oriental relatives. In addition, the British are not as curious as other breeds.
Representatives of this breed are reserved and independent. They prefer to play the role of an observer rather than take part in the case. Homebodies, do not tend to walk on the street. Like other felines, these animals need constant access to food, water, and a litter box. They are good with other pets (including dogs, rodents and birds), but they also do well as a single animal. It is better to place a cat bed higher – in a place where the animal will feel safe.
British Shorthair cats are generally a robust breed with rare problems. Since they were bred in the past with the Persian cat, there is a very low chance of PCKD. This disease causes kidney problems due to the progressive development of cysts or perforations. For diagnosis, special genetic tests are provided. Therefore, it is worth asking breeders about the health status of their cats (conscientious breeders should know about this).
The skin of the British cat does not need special care. These neat animals take care of themselves, but will be happy with the attention of the owner. The condition of the coat depends on the health of the cat, so regularly undergo medical examinations, and also treat the animal from parasites.
